New Remix: Lady Gaga vs Foster The People

Lady Gaga

With all eyes on the impending premiere of Lady Gaga’s ‘Marry The Night’ video, it might be easy to overlook the release of her ‘Born This Way’ remix collection, which is slated to drop on November 21. ‘Pumped Up Kicks’ peddlers, Foster The People, whose ‘The Edge Of Glory’ mix has just debuted, stand out as the most familiar name amidst the host of lesser-known indie acts (not least, British band Wild Beasts) summoned to put all-new angles on tracks from Gaga’s current LP.

FTP’s frenzied spin is all dizzying buzz-saw synths and skittery beats, speeding up Gaga’s vocal and drawing out the hard-edged club element that we always suspected lurked within the original. Blast it below.

Alternate Video: Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga

Any new visual from the Haus Of Gaga is always a welcome sight to us here at Play For Life, so you can imagine our excitement on learning that the avant-pop queen had released an alternative version of her ‘You & I’ video, and, even better news, had ditched her irritable alter ego Joe Calderone (after that VMAs intro, we’re so over him, anyway), chosing to appear instead as a silk slip-sporting nymph.

The first of a confirmed series of five new ‘You & I’ “fashion films” starring different characters from the original video, ‘Haus of Ü’ errs on the more tasteful side of art-house naughtiness for once, demonstrating Gaga’s elegant flexibility as she contorts into various contemporary dance poses. Similar to other Haus Of Gaga promos, this monochrome vignette has the quality of a photoshoot-in-motion, probably due to the fact it was shot and styled in partnership with Dutch fashion photographers Inez Van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin.

We’re certainly enjoying Gaga’s country nymphette chic, see if you feel the same about her first ‘You & I’ mini-video by giving it a blast below.

New Remix: Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga has been calling on lots of unexpected acts to remix tracks from her second album, ‘Born This Way’, the latest of these being acclaimed British indie outfit Wild Beasts.

In its original form, Gaga’s slightly generic, but nonetheless impactful country-rock ballad ‘You & I’ is one of the most conventionally poppy songs on the album, but Wild Beasts strip back all the bombastic drums and electric guitar flourishes, leaving untouched just a few lines of vocals. They then twist the song into a shimmering ambient track and slip in a new piano hook, with elegant and beautifully composed results. Good for them.

And, since this has been named as an official ‘You & I’ mix, we’re assuming it has Gaga’s much-coveted stamp of approval, too. Have a listen below.

New Video: Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga’s new video, then. It’s called ‘You & I’, and is the latest single from her chart-dominating LP ‘Born This Way’, that much is certain. Aside from that, the whole thing gets very confusing.

In keeping with hallowed ‘Born This Way’ tradition, Gaga’s guises are numerous, inexplicable, and downright odd; not least the stubble-and-quiff ensemble of masculine alter-ego Joe Calderone, vintage Frankenstein couture, and various other wigs, gowns and get-ups. And why she’s thrashing about in a dusty barn dressed as a mermaid is beyond us… ours is not to question the Haus Of Gaga.

If you close your eyes and blot out the weirdness of the video, ‘You & I’ is a fairly standard country lovesong. Gaga dedicates some nostalgic lyrics to a “cool Nebraska guy” long gone, hammering at the piano as southern-fried guitar licks and ‘We Will Rock You’-scale drum hits sound overhead. So, we can’t help but ask, why the depraved visuals to go with it? Ask Gaga, the scariest would-be Barney’s Santa in NYC, if you dare.

So, without further procrastination from us, check out ‘You & I’ below. Please note that it includes some pretty ‘racy’ content, so might not be advisable viewing for the littlest Little Monsters out there.

Demo Track: Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga

Known for her generosity (and dresses fashioned from meat, of course), Lady Gaga has paid her dues to one of pop’s original provocateurs, the great and only Cher, gifting her with a RedOne co-penned demo called ‘The Greatest Thing’ for the iconic ‘If I Could Turn Back Time’ diva’s new album.

Cher seemed delighted with her new present, an electrified piano ballad with a beat that emulates Gaga’s ‘Poker Face’. “Just walked in from studio! Finished first track on new CD and… GAGA, YOU ARE THE GREATEST THING TO ME”, she tweeted, later adding, “it’s not a duet! Who knows? One can wish!”. The song seems an almost tailor-made fit for her, featuring the highest concentration of distorted vocals we’ve heard since Cher’s own dancefloor smash ‘Believe’.

Listen to a Gaga-sung demo of the track below, and you’ll see what we mean.

New Cover: Nick Jonas

Nick Jonas

It seems Lady Gaga was particularly taken with the latest cover of her ‘Born This Way’ anthem ‘The Edge Of Glory’, perhaps because this time the perpetrator was none other than “dreamy” Jonas Brother Nick, who performed his version of the song during a recent acoustic gig in LA.

Finding a spare moment on her current Japanese promo tour to acknowledge the homage, Mother Monster shared the cover with her Twitter followers, posting up a link to a fan-filmed video of Joe’s rendition dubbed ‘The Edge Of Jonas’. A starstruck Gaga also tweeted: “Swoon! Nick Jonas singing ‘The Edge of Glory’. On my way to press conference in Taichung, listening to it. So dreamy!”

See below to check out Nick teetering on the cusp of Gaga-sized greatness with his ‘The Edge Of Glory’ cover.

First Look: Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga

In a huge couple of days for music video premieres, Lady Gaga makes the street her concert hall (presumably prior to the happenings shown in Chris Brown and Justin Bieber’s ‘Next 2 You’ visuals) in the performance-led new promo for her latest song ‘The Edge Of Glory’.

Making her debut as a one-woman urban dance artiste, a nattily-dressed Gaga adds glamour to street props like fire escapes and safety railings with some scorching MJ-esque moves.

Reminding us more than a little of the solo spectacular played out in Robyn’s ‘Call Your Girlfriend’ promo, we present to you the inimitable Gaga, as accompanied by legendary E Street Band saxophonist Clarence Clemens, in her ‘The Edge Of Glory’ vid. Watch below.

As of today’s much-hyped launch, visitors to the virtual neighborhood of GagaVille will be able to unlock exclusive tracks from the avant-pop diva’s latest LP by completing various tasks and quests.

Lady Gaga explained it better when she said: “I want to celebrate and share ‘Born This Way’ with my little monsters in a special way that’s never been done before. Zynga has created a magical place in FarmVille where my fans can come play, and be the first to listen to the album”.

More details can be found at www.zynga.com/ladygaga. We’ve also provided a stream of the good Lady’s latest track ‘Hair’, which popped up on iTunes yesterday. Check that out below.

New Video: Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga

So it’s finally here; the real, actual and official video for Lady Gaga’s video for new single ‘Judas’. The ”cultural baptism” Lady Gaga described is upon us at last. She’s done her best to wow everyone all over again by serving up this latest visual feast: a lush, modern twist on religion and romance in which she, as Mary Magdalene, sports blue PVC amongst a gang of leather-clad bike-riding disciples… or something. Who are we to question co-director Gaga’s artistic vision?

Gaga said in a recent interview with MSNBC: “I want to allow the video to speak for itself”. And with that said, there doesn’t seem much else to do other than watch the thing, so do that here.

New Cover: Little Big Town

Little Big Town

Never mind Lady Gaga’s ‘Country Road’ edit of her smash hit ‘Born This Way’, because reigning kings and queens of the cover Little Big Town have brought us the darn tootin’, guitar-twanging real thing with a bonafied country rework of the track.

For the latest installment of their ‘Scattered, Smothered and Covered’ series of  vids, the brave band have taken on the hefty task of reinterpreting Gaga’s signature tune, putting their own authentic mark on the song by adding an upright bass, banjo and snare drums. The harmonies seem sweeter than ever, and the group transform the song from loud-and-proud anthem to strident country ballad without breaking a sweat.

See how the LBT version stands up to Gaga’s towering original by checking it out this YouTube clip.
