New Track: Drake feat Lil Wayne

Drake

So, arriving in hot pursuit of that Nicki Minaj collaboration we brought you last week, here’s yet another track from Drake’s slightly delayed, but still soon-to-be-released sophomore LP, ‘Take Care’…

His Young Money mentor, Lil Wayne, is on board for this one, joining Drizzy in full smooth-talking flow on suave slow-jam, ‘The Real Her’. Both are on top form, dripping honeyed words across this mellow mid-afternoon ballad, which sounds set to be one of the more understated ‘Take Care’ takes. Lil Wayne’s appearance is subtle and satisfyingly brief – he doesn’t try to milk his role or take over the show – but instead lets Drake hug the spotlight throughout.

With the due date for ‘Take Care’ set back to November 15, ‘The Real Her’ is an ideal calming agent for any impatient Drizzy fan. Stream it below, where you’ll also find a showreel-style trailer for the album.

New Track: Drake feat Nicki Minaj

Drake

With a couple of past duets to their collective name, Young Money label compadres Nicki Minaj and Drake are hoping their latest partnership, ‘Make Me Proud’, will further prove their winning reputation as prince and princess of hip-hop collaborations.

Taken from Drake’s solo LP, ‘Take Care’, which is now set to be released on 15 Nov, the track was produced by T-Minus, also the man behind the desk on Nicki’s Drake-featuring ‘Moment 4 Lyf’.

Opening up to Elle magazine about his relationship with Miss Minaj, with whom he staged a fake Twitter marriage last summer, Drizzy said: “I don’t know if we were really pretending. I’d marry Nicki. I think Nicki would be one of the only people that would understand me at the end of all of this and be able to love me”. Though Nicki hasn’t exactly made an explicit response to that would-be proposal yet, she did find time to put in a promotional plug for ‘Make Me Proud’, so for us that’s as good as an acceptance.

Available now on iTunes, stream ‘Make Me Proud’ below.

New Video: Drake

Drake

Adele’s ‘Someone Like You’ isn’t the only eagerly-awaited video making a splash across the music listings this week; Canadian MC Drake has dropped his very own column-inch stealing visual for ‘Headlines’. It’s the latest clip to be lifted from his sophomore LP ‘Take Care’, due out via Cash Money/ Young Money on October 24.

The promo sees Drizzy exploring all avenues of his home city of Toronto, taking in the civic opulence of more affluent areas of the neighborhood while also venturing across the tracks to spray his October’s Very Own tag on a derelict building. “The real is on the rise”, he states, making a symbolic ascent in an elevator.

Though we’re happy to see Drizzy’s still feeling his Canadian roots; the banquets, rows of Range Rovers and personalized ‘Take Care’ SkyDome (ironic shows of hip-hop bravado as they surely are) kind of confuse his claim to “real”-ness. What do you think?

New Tracks: Drake

Drake

Hardly a week goes by without prolific Young Money maestro Drake posting up some exclusive or other on his personal blog, October’s Very Own, and this past seven days have been no exception to that rule.

First up came ‘Club Paradise’, a meandering ode-to-ladies on which Drake showcases his distinctive quick-switching between rapped verses and a silkily-sung hook. Second in line: ‘Free Spirit’, a stronger cut apparently inspired by a Princess Diana quote. Yes, really. Backed up by guest MC Rick Ross, Drake spits a string of encouragements (“tatt my name on you so I know it’s real”) to his female fans over woozy saxophone tones and a muted backing track, demonstrating a verbal mastery over snappier tempos as well as the slow, viscous flow he’s better known for.

No word yet as to whether either of these swear-laden offerings will feature on Drake’s forthcoming sophomore set ‘Take Care’, but they’re free to claim over at October’s Very Own, along with Drizzy’s fresh and free remix of Wacka Flocka Flame’s ‘Round Of Applause’. Stream the tracks below.

New Remix: Drake feat Justin Bieber

Justin Bieber & Drake

Justin Bieber is clearly making moves to break free from the teen-pop stigma of his early career (cue the ‘Someday’ perfume commercial), the latest milestone in his epic evolution into mature R&B phenom being Biebs’ dark, dangerous new remix of Drake’s ‘Trust Issues’.

Despite its toned-down lyrics (the rather risque “I’mma sip until I feel it/ I’mma smoke it till it’s done” becomes “I’mma sing until I feel it/ I’mma go till it’s done”), Biebs’ interpretation still simmers with the same sultry heat as the original, which is taken from Drizzy’s forthcoming LP ‘Take Care’. Why not check it out below.

New Track: Lenny Kravitz feat Drake

Lenny Kravitz

Back in action after a three-year hiatus from recording, Lenny Kravitz is all set to release his new record ‘Black And White America’ on August 30.

Boasting drop-ins from hip-hop giants Jay-Z and Drake, the high-profile LP is Lenny’s self-styled soul-funk chronicle, an autobiographical melting-pot of synth-led power ballads, retro rock standards and disco grooves, each wrung out with every last drop of his trademark rockstar flair.

Sample Drake-featuring album track ‘Sunflower’, which Lenny co-wrote with Swizz Beatz, below.

Free Mixtape: The Weeknd

The Weeknd

“He’s one of the greatest artists I’ve ever heard. To hear someone with an incredible body of work is very rare. It’s very inspiring. I’m proud of him. He works real hard. He’s just an incredible person, [has] become a really close friend to me”. Thus spoke rapper-turned-fanboy Drake on R&B auteur The Weeknd, whose new mixtape ‘Thursday’ came out last week to a rapturous reception.

Canadian singer-songwriter-producer Abel Tesfaye proved a magnet for critical plaudits when ‘House Of Balloons’, the first in a plotted trilogy of Weeknd mixtapes, came out earlier this year. ‘Thursday’ proves a fitting sequel to its acclaimed predecessor, hitting an unnerving note that resonates somewhere between the sublime and the sinister, between Tesfaye’s fevered falsetto and the songs’ pervasively chilly electronica, between an intimate, bedroom-studio production feel and the sheer arc of ambition described by mammoth tracks like ‘The Birds Part 1′, hypnotic Drake-collaboration ‘The Zone’, or ska-tinged closing saga ‘Heaven Or Las Vegas’.

Anyway. Click here to pick up ‘Thursday’ for the unbelievably low, low price of $0.

‘Echoes of Silence’, the final part of the Weeknd mixtape trilogy, is slated for a Fall release.

New Track: Drake

Drake

Drake has dropped off an outspoken new track titled ‘Headlines’, blasting record label beaurocrats in what’s alleged to be the lead single from his sophomore album ‘Take Care’.

Drizzy’s feud with his umbrella label Universal Music Group was a running news story last month, going public when the Toronto-based rapper’s attempts to post free songs onto his blog were blocked by Universal reps. Well, if he’s that unhappy about his ‘art’ being subject to a major music organization’s rules and regulations, there are more than a few indie labels out there who would be happy to house him, should he ever make the break from Universal. Just saying.

“If they don’t get it they’ll be over you/ That new sh*t that you got is overdue/ You better do what you’re supposed to do”, rhymes the rebellious Young Money MC of pushy label bosses, proving he’s not beaten yet with the defiant declaration, “the real is on the rise”.

‘Take Care’ isn’t due out till October 24, but until then, you can take one of two routes in your dealings with ‘Headlines’. You could either take advantage of the free download Drake posted on his ‘October’s Very Own’ blog, or alternatively, just play it safe with the Universal-approved preview streaming below. We leave this entirely up to your musical morals.

First Look: DJ Khaled

DJ Khaled

Giving even collaboration queen Nicki Minaj a run for her Young Money, the tracklist on modest rapper DJ Khaled’s fifth album ‘We The Best Forever’ reads like a ‘who’s who’ of R&B talent (with Miss Minaj herself being the one glaringly obvious exception). Bragging guest spots from the likes of Mary J Blige, Busta Rhymes, Cee Lo, Akon and Chris Brown, there isn’t a single track on which the co-dependent rhyme king appears solo.

In the just-debuted new video for signature track ‘I’m On One’, Khaled appears in the fine company of Young Money roster stars Drake and Lil Wayne, and Maybach Music Group boss Rick Ross. Renegade leak-fanatic Drake exudes plenty of his customary rap-singing swagger, while Ross is on hand looking suitably mogul-like, cutting a dash in some regal leisure wear.

Witness the Maybach and Young Money crews run the show in DJ Khaled’s ‘I’m On One’ video below (complete with strong language and R&B-style imagery of girls, cars and cribs).

Blog Pick: Drake

Drake

Rapper Drake took to his ‘October’s Very Own’ blog with proof that he still has an ear firmly clamped to the sounds of the blogosphere, dropping an introductory verse or two onto a much-hyped SBTRKT remix called ‘Wildfire’.

Existing vocals on the song come from Yukimi Nagano of Swedish electro band Little Dragon, but Drake’s intro adds a new dimension to her snappy delivery and the SBTRKT-crafted beats, making this a three-part alliance that works very well.

Download the harmonious whole track here via Drake’s own link.

He also used October’s Very Own as a platform to debut ‘Dreams Money Can Buy’, a new solo track that’s rumored to be the first cut off his upcoming sophomore LP ‘Take Care’. He included this short piece to accompany it: “A song that I felt the need to share. Not my single. Just a piece of my story. Hear me out though…”.

Hear out and download the song itself here, if you’re not averse to a liberal sprinkling of quite explicit lyrics, that is.
