Free Track: WZRD

Rapper/ some-time actor Kid Cudi has gone and named January 30 as the release date for the debut album from his new musical venture, WZRD. If you’re wondering who or what WZRD actually is/ are, it’s Cudi and producer Dot Da Genius’ progressive rock collaboration, previously known as 2 B Continuum. So far we’ve had a first taste of Cud’s new sound via introspective demo ‘Angels And Demons’, which may or may not feature on the duo’s as-yet untitled first record. Now comes a new track, fresh off the mixing desk, offering a fresh insight into the WZRD’s cosmic rock realm.

Tweets Cudder of the track in question, a woozy meld of psychedelic guitars, stomping beats and his own unique take on a slurred rock vocal, titled ‘Brake’: “Tonight, you will all witness the new chapter, the new journey. Music will never be the same…”. He also had a message for fans: “Thank You to everyone showing love man, you have no idea how much it means us. On cloud niner at the moment! I LOVE YOU ALL!”, and this one for haters: “To the people that dont like it, I do, and I feel good about it. Thats all that matters”.

You can stream ‘Brake’ below, and download it for free at this link, as supplied by Cudi himself.

First Listen: Kid Cudi

Kid Cudi

Alt-rapper Kid Cudi practically does his own PR, having taken to his Twitter account and ‘Cud Life’ tumblr blog to do some self-hyping around the grand debut of his new collaboration with producer Dot Da Genius. The first sign of progress to emerge from the rock-influenced side project, which Cudders has christened Wizard, is a track called ‘Perfect Is The Word’.

Gone are the quick-witted rhymes and hip hop beats that characterize Scott Mescudi aka Kid Cudi’s solo work, replaced instead by a repetetive guitar riff set ominously in the minor key, reverb-soaked vocals and a halting, military band-style drum patter.

Hmm. We really don’t know what to make of this one. Perhaps we just need time to adjust to Cud’s visionary new musical ethos, as summarized in one of his recent tweets: “I’m moving forward, all w/ me LETS GO! Life is about evolving, which is why I’m successful”. If you say so, Scotty. We’re right there with you.
