Aside from Drake’s ‘Take Care’, one sure contender for the most anticipated hip-hop release of winter 2012 is ‘Camp’, the debut LP from Childish Gambino. Better known for his day job as the star of NBC sitcom ‘Community’, actor/ writer Donald Glover has caught more praise than flack for his brave new rap venture. Despite the hype his album has recieved, he still doesn’t see himself as fitting in with other MCs. “J Cole and Drake are way cooler than me”, he tells Billboard. “Drake wears gold chains. I could never pull off wearing chains. J Cole’s been to jail. I haven’t”.
Jail sentence or no jail sentence, Gambino has earned his hip-hop stripes, working hard on the college music circuit and releasing a fleet of mixtapes before he finally inked a deal with indie label Glassnote Records. His versatility as an artist is evident in the range of styles and tones he adopts across the record, from the dark and quick-spitting ‘Yonkers’-esque ‘Bonfire’ to inspiring confessional ‘Outside’, to the smooth electrobeat sounds of breakup jam, ‘Heartbeat’, which is set to be his next official single. Taken from a recent episode of Conan O’Brien’s late night show, check out a clip of Childish performing that very track below.
