New Video: Britney Spears

Britney Spears

Having flirted with all-things-illegal in her ‘I Wanna Go’ promo, Britney Spears has kicked things up a law-breaking notch in her latest clip, ‘Criminal’, which had its first airing earlier this week.

The video finds ‘Femme Fatale’ star embarking on a goode olde English crime spree, playing cops and robbers with her real-life partner (and manager) Jason Trawick as they flee from the feds. Shot on location on the grim and gritty streets of east London, the fast-paced (and often saucy) scenario sees Ms Spears taking on her most demanding role since she played a many-wigged assassin in ‘Toxic’.

It’s a thrill to see her back to the butt-kicking Brit we all know and love, throwing her all into the action sequences and storyline in a way we haven’t seen in years. But if we’re being hypercritical, the romantic scenes with Jason – given their roots in reality – were a little akward to watch. Then there’s the fact that the promo’s director, Chris Marrs Piliero, has spoken up to defend the use of guns in the clip. What’s your view on ‘Criminal’, is Brit bordering on bad taste, or simply creating controversy? Decide by watching it below.

New Remix: Britney Spears

Britney Spears

Leading this week’s set of semi-exclusive Britney Spears stories is the news that the pop paragon’s latest ‘Femme Fatale’ single ‘I Wanna Go’ has been given an extra injection of Far Eastern glitz and glamor, thanks to a new Bollywood-style remix that features popular Indian singer Sonu Nigam.

Seeming to follow on from a topical trend that kicked off when Lady Gaga’s ‘Born This Way’ was reworked by fraternal Gujarati duo Salim and Sulaiman, this isn’t the first time one of Britney’s tracks has received the Bollywood treatment. Her club-stomper ‘Till The World Ends’ took on some pumped-up beats and a Punjabi breakdown at the hands of production team Culture Shock and entertainment site Desi Hits, the latter of whom are also responsible for presenting the ‘I Wanna Go’ remix.

“So excited about having Sonu on ‘I Wanna Go’. His vocals add such a different feel which I love!”, tweeted Britney of the mix. “Watch out Bollywood, it’s Britney and Sonu!”

Head over to Desi Hits to take a listen.

New Remix: R Kelly vs Britney Spears

R Kelly

R Kelly is flying solo in an attempt to better the all-girl remix of Britney Spears’ ‘Femme Fatale’ club banger ‘Till The World Ends’, bringing an abundance of Autotuned vocals to his own apocalyptic edit.

Leaving the first stretch of the track intact, Kellz stamps his mark on the remix with some debonair lyrics, testing his famed chords on a falsetto vocal routine towards the end. “Slide up in this club/ This beat’s got me in love/ Till I just don’t care/ It’s like I’m walking on air/ It’s a party right here”, he sings, cranking up the Autotuning levels to full tilt. Stream it below.

This remix should serve to boost interest in R Kelly’s current ‘Love Letter’ tour, which wraps in a couple of weeks. Check the remaining dates here.

New Video: Britney Spears

Britney Spears

Conveying a not-so subtle message to intrusive press reps in the video for her third ‘Femme Fatale’ single ‘I Wanna Go’, Britney Spears turns pop-punk vigilante on rogue members of the paparazzi after losing patience with reporters during a tedious Q&A session. The usually mild-mannered starlet is also seen canoodling with cops and flashing unsuspecting pedestrians on an action-packed rampage through the streets.

Looking more animated than we’ve seen her in quite a while, the rebellious Ms Spears does some symbolic damage to pesky photographers with a few feisty lashes of her microphone cable, before speeding off in a sports car with a rugged companion.

Watch the below video to witness Brit live out her press-retaliation fantasies in the ‘I Wanna Go’ promo.

New Remix: Britney Spears feat Nicki Minaj and Ke$ha

Britney Spears

With a chart-topping collaboration with Rihanna already in the bag in the form of the duo’s recent ‘S&M’ “Rhi-mix”, Britney Spears has scored another home run with a club-ready rework of her own ‘Till The World Ends’. The new version sees the ‘Femme Fatale’ singer partner up with Ke$ha and Nicki Minaj, two fellow leading ladies of pop who both have connections to the track. Ke$ha, who penned the original song for Britney’s new album, lends her distinctive vocals to the chorus; while Nicki, who is set to join Brit on the road during her upcoming summer tour, opens the track in typical Minaj style with some fierce, confrontational verses.

Spears tweeted the new artwork for the single, adding, “thanks for lending your voices girls”.

Billboard have a stream of the song, listen to it here.

New Track: Rihanna feat Britney Spears

Rihanna

Two forces of pop nature have collided with the news of a brand new collaboration between Rihanna and Britney Spears, which is officially so earth-shakingly big it’s practically registering on the Richter scale. Well, almost. After some shameless Twitter-based self-hyping by Britney and Rihanna both, the duo premiered their raunchy new “RIHmix” of Rihanna’s ‘S&M’ here on Z100. The hybrid version of the track features Britney’s distinctive vocals on an entirely new, but equally as R-rated verse, plus her all-new contributions to the chorus.

And it’s all thanks to Rihanna’s followers on Twitter that the pair were inspired to attempt this duet. Having posed the question “who do you guys MOST wanna see me collaborate with on a song?” on Twitter a few weeks ago, Ri was met with the resounding fan verdict that she should team up with one Ms Britney Spears. And with the fans having spoken, the pair duly got to work on this latest tune. That’s the power of Twitter then. Truly awe-inspiring isn’t it?

First Look: Britney Spears

Britney Spears

The video for Britney Spears’ latest single ‘Till The World Ends’ had its premiere recently, debuting a new-look Brit taking centre stage at an apolocalyptic underground rave.

Now, we say ‘new’, but, as groundbreaking and futuristic as this latest clip literally is, what with the giant asteroids crashing to earth and all, we can’t help spotting some trademark themes that have appeared in quite a few of Britney’s past music videos. In particular, Brit’s tousled blonde locks and steamy dance moves reminded us of the vid for her 2001 hit ‘Slave 4 U’. It seems that with such a huge video archive to her name, which goes all the way back to the schoolroom scenario played out in her first single ‘Hit Me Baby One More Time’, Britney can’t help revisiting a few of her classic moves and moments.

Is it time that Brit branched out? Or should she stick to her winning visual formula of sweaty club scenes, moody dance troupes and barely-there costumes? Only time, and video directors, will tell.

Blog Pick: Britney Spears

Britney Spears

It’s probably a well-known fact that Britney Spears doesn’t have much of a hand in writing her music these days. Most people just accept this, and continue to either like or dislike Brit and her pop catalog as before.

But on reading criticism from bloggers about Britney’s lack of creative involvement in new album ‘Femme Fatale’ (ie Spears is not credited with writing any of the songs), songwriter Heather Bright, who penned ‘Trouble For Me’ for the record, has responded in defense of the venerable Ms Spears.

Indeed, she commends Britney for not insisting on taking credit for songs she didn’t actually write, as some pop stars are known to do, adding that “Britney’s one of the few artists I’ve worked with who didn’t try to take something that wasn’t hers”.

Bright goes on to name and shame those popstars who, unlike Britney, allegedly claim false writing credits for their music. “Rihanna takes publishing [ie claims a cut of the royalties due on the song itself], Justin Bieber takes publishing, Kanye West takes publishing. On all the stuff that they don’t write, they take publishing”. Note the allegedly there, please, thank you.
