A former farm laborer and busker on the Parisian metro, august bluesman Seasick Steve looked like he couldn’t believe his luck as he regaled a packed house with songs from his latest album ‘You Can’t Teach An Old Dog New Tricks’ at the London iTunes Festival.
Seeming a little overwhelmed by the occasion, Steve summoned his Third Man Records boss Jack White and (Jack’s Dead Weather band mate) Alison Mosshart to join him on-stage in a rendition of Mississippi Fred McDowell’s blues stalwart ‘Write Me A Few Lines’. Led Zeppelin axe-man John Paul Jones also accompanied ol’ Steve and his spontaneous supergroup as they burned bright but brief through a one-song jam session. Watch it below.
A man with many celebrity pals, Steve was also guest of honor at a recent Foo Fighters stadium gig, having encountered frontman Dave Grohl years ago at Nirvana’s first ever show. With the Foos playing the part of humble support musicians, Steve performed his album track ‘Back In The Doghouse’, receiving the ultimate endorsement when Dave hailed him as “the real deal”. And there’s really no higher accolade than a compliment from The Grohl. Watch the profanity-packed clip here.
